Teen Car Control Clinic 8/9/20

Dakota County Technical College

About this event

Updated July 20, 2020: This event has been canceled. We have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation including current federal, state and local orders and guidance, as well as reports of infection rates across our region and the United States. The effectiveness of our program is largely driven by our knowledgeable instructors and their ability to provide personal, in-car coaching to young drivers which we are unable to provide at the current time. And while we have explored alternative coaching techniques such as lead-follow, our opinion is that those alternative techniques do not provide the same level of safety and effectiveness as in-car coaching for inexperienced drivers. Therefore, we are pausing our Teen Clinics program for 2020. Thank you for your understanding.

Are you concerned whether those regular driver’s education courses are enough to keep your teenager safe on the roads?

A driver’s education course teaches the principles of road awareness and safety for prospective first-time drivers . Courses generally cover what we call the basics: Road signs and what they mean, principles of being a safe and responsible driver, how to operate a motor vehicle, traffic laws, and theoretically how to handle those emergency situations. But did they get the experience to know how quickly they can safely stop their vehicle? Or how wet roads or going off-road such as swearing onto the shoulder of the highway – affect driving dynamics?

We take things a step further…..

For over a decade, the Glacier Lakes Chapter of Audi Club North America (ACNA) has taught hundreds of teens to become better, safer, more confident drivers. Our Teen Driving Clinic is the  perfect place for the teen driver to have fun, improve driving skills, and build confidence. The course is designed to help teens improve their ability to control a vehicle in both normal and emergency situations.

Our one-day program combines classroom sessions with behind-the-wheel exercises. Drivers learn how to handle their car in various driving conditions and situations, while receiving coaching, encouragement, and praise from their trained, in-car instructor. From slalom and skid pad exercises to braking and accident avoidance, we’ll  teach your teen in one day what was not offered in their Driver’s Education classes.

Event requirements

Participant Requirements

  • Drivers must be between 15 and 19 years of age*
  • Drivers must bring their valid driver’s license or permit
  • At least one parent/guardian must accompany any driver under 18
  • Event waiver forms must be completed and signed before proceeding to the driving course
  • Teen students are not required to be members of ACNA for this event
  • Drivers must wear closed toe shoes (cleated shoes, heavy boots, flip-flops, crocks, sandals are not permitted)

Parents/ Legal Guardians – a few notes for you:

  • You must be on-site for the duration of the day if your student is under 18 years old.
  • You will need to sign an event waiver at check-in that allows your minor student to participate in the clinic. You will also sign an event  waiver for yourself.
  • Please register as a volunteer when you register your student. Your services will be needed at the event. Students knock over and run over cones during the on-track exercises and we need your help to set back up. This allows instructors to stay in the car and increase the amount of coaching and practice your student gets. Please  wear shoes that can get wet – roughly half the cones are in the flooded paddock!

*Over 19 years old and  interested in participating as a student?

Our Teen Car Control Clinics are designed to provide new drivers with the skills they need to be safe on the road, so we focus on our 15-19 year old drivers first. However, you may be eligible to register as a student depending on class size and instructor availability. Please inquire at events@audiclubglacierlakes.org.  Participants over 19 years old must also be Audi Club North America (ACNA) Members. To join or renew, visit the ACNA website at www.audiclubna.org/membership
