Have you ever wondered what it’s like to drive on one of the most famous road courses in the world? Well now you don’t have to wonder any more. Join us and drive the track with fellow Audi enthusiasts under controlled conditions behind a pace car. If you are an NEQ track veteran you already know what it’s like to drive the Glen at speed. But what’s it like at street speeds with your family in the car?
Every year Watkins Glen International (The Glen) holds this opening day fundraiser to kick off the racing season. The price of admission is a $20 donation to the Watkins Glen R.A.C.E Foundation plus a small administrative fee. The mission of R.A.C.E. (Racing And Community Enrichment) is to meet the needs of local underserved populations with a focus on youth-oriented support.
The day will begin at Audi Rochester on West Henrietta Road where you will receive a boxed breakfast and have a little time to socialize, form a distance of course, and then make our way to the The Glen where we will line up and be escorted via pace car for 3 laps of this world-famous race course. Upon completing the pace laps on the track, because of COVID, the group will be escorted off the property. If you chose, you may return to do more paced laps on our own by purchasing tickets on line at TheGlen.com opening day event. (note that clubs get a $5 discount so the individual car tickets through the Glen are $25) Or spend the rest of the day exploring the Watkins Glen area and enjoy the natural wonder of the area or visit the many local wineries. One activity is to drive the old 6 mile road course on the streets and back roads around Wakins Glen. Maps will be available.
The schedule for the day will be...
8:00AM - Meet up at Audi Rochester for a little social distancing and a boxed breakfast courtesy of Audi Rochester. (If you are coming from outside the Rochester area you are welcome to skip the meet up at the Dealership and meet us at the track at 10:30 AM) We are starting so early because the track is running clubs in morning 9:00AM to Noon and the general public in the afternoon. 1:00 to 3:00
8:45 – 9:00 - leave for the track, making your own way. It’s about a 1½ hr. drive via the NYS Thruway and Rt 14 through Geneva.
10:30 - regroup at the track. Enter via Gate 2. We anticipate we will be able to line up as a group on the property. (details to follow) While on the property, because of COVID-19 restrictions, you will have to stay in your car. No bathrooms, will be available at the track, so make sure you stop on the way!
Once we are lined up, we will follow a pace car for three laps on the track at highway speeds. At the end of the laps we will be ushered off the property to the highway. At that point you are on your own.
You may return to the track for additional laps sessions at $25 per 3 laps by purchasing tickets on line directly from The Glen or enjoy the rest of the day in the Finger Lakes.
If you are interested in driving the original 6 mile road course through the village an back roads around the area, maps will be available.
